Thinking Theologically About Social Institutions brings together experts in theology and social science to reflect on the theological significance of social institutions such as not-for-profit charities, welfare organisations, and the military. How might institutions that often have complex and evolving relationships with the Church better understand the theological dimensions of their history, purpose, and mission? Featuring Professor Johannes Eurich (Heidelberg University), Professor Craig Furneaux (QUT), Jessica Grant, and Stephen Harrison, the seminar will explore how theology can illuminate the role of social institutions in contemporary society through presentations, panel discussion, and conversation.

Professor Johannes Eurich
Professor Johannes Eurich is Professor of Practical Theology and the Study of Christian Social Services at Heidelberg University, Germany, and Director of the Diakoniewissenschaftliches Institut. A leading scholar in diaconia studies, his research explores how Christian faith is embodied through social care, welfare, and community service. He has extensive experience in international research collaborations and serves on several church and social policy advisory bodies within Germany.

Dr Stephen Harrison
Dr Stephen Harrison is Director of Mission, Engagement and Spiritual Care at Anglicare Southern Queensland. He holds master's and doctoral qualifications in ministry, along with qualifications in science, theology, education, and community welfare. Stephen has served the Anglican Church of Southern Queensland for 30 years in roles including youth ministry, school and university chaplaincy, and diocesan leadership.

The Rev'd Canon Jess Grant
The Rev'd Canon Jess Grant is a Canon of St John's Cathedral, Brisbane, and an Australian Army chaplain. She holds qualifications in nursing, theology, and divinity, and brings experience from both ecclesial and military contexts. Her work offers a unique perspective on the intersection of faith, vocation, leadership, and public service.

Associate Professor Craig Furneaux
Associate Professor Craig Furneaux is a researcher and educator in the School of Accountancy at Queensland University of Technology and a member of the Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies. With more than 30 years' experience working with and researching nonprofit organisations, his research focuses on accountability, capability, and change in the nonprofit sector, including faith-based charities and social enterprises.
