Cracking of Christendom

Five hundred years ago, a series of conflicts ignited by Martin Luther's 95 theses forever altered the landscape of Western Christianity. This unit, "Cracking of Christendom" explores the profound impact of these events on contemporary life and worship in Australia. By examining the religious and political turmoil of the time, students will gain a deeper understanding of how these historical debates continue to influence modern conversations about religion. Taught collaboratively by experts in theology and history from diverse traditions, this course promises a rich and engaging learning experience.

Reading Trauma in the Book of Jeremiah

The book of Jeremiah is a complex and challenging text, filled with themes of pain and trauma. In the "Reading Trauma in the Book of Jeremiah" intensive, students will explore the socio-political context that gave rise to this prophetic literature. Using trauma as a lens, the course will delve into issues such as divine violence, forced deportation, diaspora, and communal identity formation. Associate Professor Liz Boase, a renowned scholar in trauma readings of biblical texts, will guide students through this one-week intensive, offering profound insights into the impact of trauma on communal groups.

Aboriginal Cultures and Spirituality

"Aboriginal Cultures and Spirituality" invites students to embark on a journey through the rich and diverse traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. This unit explores the language, symbols, and spirituality that have shaped life on this land for tens of thousands of years. Students will examine how these traditions have adapted to the impacts of colonisation and continue to influence contemporary life. By engaging with these ancient cultures, students will gain fresh perspectives on what it means to live wisely, spiritually, and relationally in today's Australia.
