First Nations Ministry Fund
The First Nations Ministry Fund was established by the Synod of the Diocese of Brisbane in 2023 to intentionally support the education and development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander theological leaders. The Fund is part of the Diocese’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation and to strengthening pathways for First Nations peoples to engage in theological study, formation, and ministry leadership across the Anglican Church.
The Fund is overseen by the First Nations Ministry Fund Advisory Committee, which includes a majority of First Nations members and exists to promote opportunities for study and research, develop relationships between communities, and administer financial assistance in a way that fosters strong future leadership.
What the Fund Supports
Applications may be made for support with:
Costs of theological study
Study resources such as laptops, tablets, textbooks, or software
Registration, travel, and other costs associated with attending conferences
Publishing of liturgy, Bible studies, or theological work
Costs associated with learning or translating First Nations languages
Other study, ministry, or research needs relevant to the applicant’s development
Exceptional circumstances consistent with the Fund’s intention (requiring full Committee endorsement)
Who Can Apply
The Fund supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people engaging in theological education or ministry development, particularly where this contributes to discernment, formation, or ongoing leadership within the Church.
How to Apply
Applicants are asked to submit a short written statement (250–500 words) describing:
their background and First Nations identity
how the funds will be used
how the support will contribute to their study, ministry development, or to elevating an Indigenous voice within the Church
the amount requested and, if relevant, the total cost of a larger project and any other funding received
Applicants should also provide the name and contact details of a recognised leader—such as an Elder, church leader, or theological college representative—who supports their application.
Reporting Requirements
Successful applicants are asked to submit an annual report including:
a one‑page reflection on how the funded work has shaped their learning
an example of their work (written, recorded, artistic, or other)
any media interviews associated with the project
receipts for approved purchases
This reporting supports good stewardship of the Fund and strengthens relationships between First Nations theologians, leaders, NATSIAC, and St Francis College.
